Jaguar Wright: Self Love #tbt

This song has never stopped giving me chills.   The visceral response I receive from the lyrics alone demand I try to meet the expectations they suggest.  Does that sound crazy? Maybe....but if you can't talk to your music what do you really expect the songs to say to you?

"Caught up in a web of deception
From this $h!t I done learned new lesson
So what cha do, you keep on playing, you play on, playa..."

I need this song...and I think "need" is more important than "love".   We're all big boys and girls so I think it's alright if we agree to disagree.  But I've needed it back then when it was released and I think I need it now.  Maybe you do.  Maybe you don't.  Share it to the person you love cause they may need it too.

"You work and work with no pay
You punch a clock but never end your day
You take vacation but your not playing
What we say by this time, here my friends, drink three
You cry, cry, revolution, but what you want is a solution
But you're more content with being a pollution
Jump in the motion, and ask the notion..."

Stay blessed.

Stalley: System on loud

Consistency...that's all I can hope for from an artist.  But hey, that's just me.  Some people just want that hit song and forget about the artist until the next time the radio or DJ play the song.   Not me.   That's why I rock with Stalley.

"Boom boom, bang bang, system on loud
Got that boom boom, bang bang, system on loud"

Every mixtape, every album...I know I can expect some heat.  Beats with some soul, lyrics from his point of view.  P.O.V...not THAT'S refreshing.  His album OHIO makes you feel like you can close your eyes and get a sense of what it's like living there. I respect that.

I just needed to drown out the world for a bit...every feel that way?  Didn't take long for me to find what I needed.  If you do play it, just keep it on high volume.

"I don't wanna be judged, I just wanna live
This for the genius loners and all my stoner kids"

Nina Simone: Don't let me be misunderstood

I love this song for so many reasons. Primarily because Nina Simone is arguably one of the mothers' of soul and my Mom Loves Nina Simone.

"If I seem edgy
I want you to know
I never mean to take it out on you
Life has its problems
And I get more than my share
But that's one thing I never mean to do

Cause I love you
Oh baby
I'm just human
Don't you know I have faults like anyone?"

Growing up made me realize how amazing my mother is.  Calm under pressure, resiliency, and determination with conviction among other things...I all got those skills from her.  I could amount to a third of who she is I'd consider myself a success. I remember hearing Nina through different times of my life.  So it seems fitting to share one.  Happy mothers day.

Anderson .Paak: Come Down

“And you talking all that shit, now come on

You gonna have to back it up”

If you are a writer...every line, every word, syllable and flow matters to you.  You want them to hear it all.  To quote one of the greats:

“INHAAALE, my rhyme is kinda fat reminiscent of a whale” –Q Tip

Enter Anderson .Paak…yes, the “new ” R&B artist.  Have you listened to his songs?!?!?! His words!?!?! This brother got bars!!! What’s amazing is that everything...from the sound to the lyrics have purpose…cause it is.  He has a catalogue to prove it.  This brother is gifted.

Now, if you’re a casual listener…you’ll still love him.  Beats are fiyah.  1st and last bars of every verse are iron clad…but just hear me when I say “sit with the songs for a while”

It does something to you. The Production/Musicianship is so thorough.  Lyrics are shady…yes, oh yes! He meant to do you dirty like that!

“Can't see her with this pitch black Gucci frames on

Let me take these bitches off

Let me get the full scope, hold up

Huh, full screen, HD, let me take another picture”

Just…listen.  But if you listen, sit.  Cause this shit will hit you hard.  I prefer his album “Venice” but “Malibu” is a great follow up.  You can’t really be disappointed with an artist that takes his sound this seriously.  He’s authentically fresh.  It’s surreal.  Do me a favor though.  Don't say he sounds like anyone.  When you realize how long he’s been doing this on stage it can make you wonder if he's influenced others but...I digress.  C'mon sun.  He’s not new.  He’s just new to you.  N’ that’s cool.  Just stay a while.  Inhale.

“Whoa, cool beans, cool beans

That's a whole lot of reefer

Let me help you with the pre-roll”

PARTYNEXTDOOR ft. Drake: Work

We know this song.  We know/I know and can admit that Rihanna killed this song. Right? Right.  Still,it's always nice to step back and enjoy the way the originator sings it.  Enter PARTYNEXTDOOR.

He's been blowing up and steadily on the rise...he could have easily done the song but went with Rhianna and it's been a hit ever since.  The rest is history.  Or Work.

Enjoy the song.  Enjoy his version.  Hell, play them back to back (pun intended).  It's worth the listen.

BTW: Drakes feature is still on it if you like the song for a certain MC with bars. -Salute

Musiq Soulchild: Wait a minute

"Something that I said, I'll never do
I think I'm in, wait a minute
I think I'm in love with you
I think I'm in, hold up, yeah
I think I'm in love with you" -Musiq

Musiq’s still got it.  I’ve always been a fan since Aijuswanaseing…we all have.  I mean, who didn’t hum along to “just friends”?  I’ll wait…

So album after album we’ve seen this brother make music his way whether some liked the evolution or not.  I don’t know about you but I’ve always respected that about him.  Check out his album.  He went back to his roots a little and I’m sure he’ll make some new fans too.  After listening to this album, I’ll stay around for the ride.
