Nas - Everything

Dfy3ziQXcAE3T8o.jpg

“When the media slings mud, we use it to build huts/

Irrefutable facts, merciful, beautiful black/”

- Nas

This song...this video...reminds us of who we are.  Powerful. Resilient. Successful. TARGETED. We all know it but sometimes, it can feel too real and too hard to look at.

Nas,  Kanye and Dream...powerful combination that created a masterful track.  I know the EP hasn’t been for everyone but this song grounds me when the world is a lil upside down. Everything is connected. When it doesn’t feel like it, music paves the way and bridges the gap. This song...is that.

Honestly?  I adore this song.  Not love. Love has been watered down lately.  ADORE. Everyone deserves this song as a reminder so… Press Play

“Dark boy, don't you die

They're just human, let them lie

You just know your world and speak your truth

Let them come to you

For your love and your heart”

-Nas

The Underachievers: Star Signs / GENERATION Z

I'm not even gonna hold you, I like to like music. But if you know me, you know it's hard for me to become a fan.  That...you have to earn.  One album in (that I've heard) and I've been genuinely interested in The Underachievers.

"Raised up deep in the beast
Had a first hand see to the war in the streets
Rely on gripping the heat
And they multiply by getting them kids
That's why I'm speaking for peace
Cause niggas be dying over the beef
But please don't fuck with the gods
You gon' be surprised by what you gon' get"

Today I felt likea bit...unnerved.  Like I'm being underestimated or taken for granted.  That only makes me become greater so I welcome that.  I say all that cause I came in ready to post "Generation Z" but came across a video compilation with "Star signs" so I figured...what the hell, I like em both!  Check these brother out ya'll...you won't be disappointed.

King Los: Confidence

“I see the eyes of the peephole

Cries from a deep soul

Overcome the lies of the evil

I realize that your real eyes done came in contact with real lies

Like contacts over real eyes is a real lie

Realize where the real lie”

…King Los.  Every song I hear from this brother brings me as much pain as joy.  Joy because he’s one of the best rappers alive.  Pain because being the best is no...longer...good enough?  Hashtag oxymoron

He’s versatile, so don’t go listening to his music expecting to hear one thing.  However, his last album “God, Money, War” was…IS…a five mic album to me.

I’ve been listening to this song a lot lately.  Every now and then you need a reminder to believe in yourself.  As I gear up for an important juncture in my life…this song has been a blessing if you need something to help you get over.  I hope it has the same impact for you as it does for me.

“We don't need too much of one thing what we need is balance

And we don't want nothing they handing out, we need a challenge”

The Roots: The next movement #TBT

17 years ago I picked up an album that changed my life.  The second song almost made me never pick up a microphone.  I'm serious.  I was always interested in rhyming but kept it as just free-styling in the beginning because... with an MC like Black Thought... What more can I say?  I can ramble on about what The Roots Crew means to me.  As for Black Thought or "Mr. Thought" if you recognize the precision of his rhymes, he is in my top five.

"The Dalai Lama of the mic, the prime minister Thought
This directed to whoever in listening range
Yo the whole state of things in the world bout to change
Black rain fallin from the sky look strange
The ghetto is red hot, we steppin on flames"

I know I already had a #TBT for the day but it wouldn't feel right if I didn't play this album all week and post it today.   There's a level of excellence I put into EVERYTHING I do that's inspired by this album and this song specifically.

"I'm like a faucet, monopoly's the object
There ain't no way to cut this tap, you got ta get wet
Your head is throbbin and I ain't said shit yet"

You know how some people say the often used phrase "Where do I begin"?  For me, when it comes to The Roots, it's "When should I finish"?  But I won't hold you.  I hope you love this song as much as I do.  17 years...The Roots is still head and shoulders above the rest.

"You theatrical as a Broadway play, this ain't Rent
One hundred percent, straight out the Basement"

Prhyme "Courtesy"

“Nowadays, chances are that if you see me throw the match

It ain't to lose the fight, it's to walk away from a burnin' bridge”

Sometimes when you have a rough day you may fold. Shit Happens.  Most times, I’m sure you go down swinging or come out on top feeling like you’re invincible.  This is my “invincible” song right now.  If you know me, you know I’ve been a huge Royce Da 5’9 fan so don’t be surprised if you see old and new songs from him…but I digress.

“Try to cross me without fallin' off, I'm afraid not/

I'm a frayed knot like a draw string/

I'm preachin' to the congregation like I'm Peter, Popoff”/

Production by DJ Premiere makes this collaboration almost unfair. Music to any Hip Hop junkies ear that wants beats AND Lyrics.  The whole album is priceless.
