Michael Jackson: Workin' Day And Night

Hi.  In honor of last week I thought I'd play the song that came on my Ipod right when I was stressed that I didn't post any music.  Besides the serendipitous timing, it's the truth with how much I've been working but...aren't we all?  Exactly.  Enjoy a little King of Pop.  Expect some more "Off the Wall" and even some "Invincible" soon.

"You Got Me Workin' Day And Night
And I'll Be Workin'
From Sun Up To Midnight"

That bass-line though!

Logic: Fade Away

This song gets me...get it?  I feel like the beat, the verse, the energy came looking for me.   God bless the second love of my life I call IPOD classic -classic for short:-)-

That burst of inspiration, creative second wind or life's daily reminder comes in different ways, shapes and forms...this song just happened to be mine.  But I digress...

"I know, I'mma get it like this, living that life while they all reminisce"

So Logic can spit...really well.  Bars? Check.  Flow? Check?  Stays on topic? Big Check.  The latter is, in my opinion, uncommon in today's class of MC's that may go for an easy punch line because driving a point home isn't as easy as some expected going into a verse or two.

"So I might just, might just, I don't know

Reinvention, that's my intention

Want so much more than this third-dimension

That's not to mention my true ascension is a bigger picture

No metaphor, I’m being real with ya"

Productions consistently tight and his flow keeps getting better with time.  Still, I won't lie I'm partial to his "Under Pressure" album.  Check him out and if you know his work...show him a lil love today.

"Fade away, fade away

They gon' know my name until it fade away"

Eric Bellinger: You can have the H**s

“You so stupid, you can have the hoes”

My brother put me on to Eric Bellinger.  Shout out to CJ but as of late, it’s been me putting him on to fiyah.  I’m glad he did though. If Eric Bellinger needed a campaign manager to run for politics I’d get in line.  Why?  Because he gets it.  There is nothing corny about relationships, love, or feeling ONE WOMAN.  It’s like Marvel comics destroying Peter Parker and Mary Jane’s relationship for years only to realize people like GROWTH.  Sorry for the minute of getting into nerd mode but this smoke and mirrors era of staying a bachelor is for the birds.   Now, I love a lot of music out right now so it’s not hate.  I’m just asking for variety.

Okay back to Eric Bellinger.  Dope beats, amazing song writer (he wrote Fine China.  Go back and listen to Fine China.  Like…LISTEN.  Nuff said) If you’re in a relationship, his songs reinforce your feelings (not that you need it).  If you’re not…he makes you want one.  Take it from me.  What he’s saying is true #lovemademedoit.

“When we at the crib she put on a show

So home is where I wanna be, yeah

It's like you a custom your body was tailored for me

Tell me how I'm gon' say I'm the king if I ain't got no queen

Gotta fall in love”

*Shout out to DJ Mustard on this beat -Salute

Erykah Badu: Tyrone

Erykah.jpg

Every so often a track comes along that’s so good it transcends the song.  Don't believe me?  Tyrone is that song.  Now, I never dated a female version of “Tyrone”.  Truthfully, I feel kinda bad cause Tyrone isn’t the bad guy! He’s actually the good friend that is picking up the deadbeat! But I digress…Erykah made a song perfect for when you need to "purge".

I ain't no cheap thrill
Cause Miss Badu is always comin' for real
And you know the deal
Every-time we go somewhere
I gotta reach down in my purse
To pay your way and your homeboys way
And sometimes your cousin's way
They don't never have to pay
Don't have no cars
Hang around in bars

I know what you’re thinking… the lyrics are cool but I don’t see what you’re saying.  That’s the thing…it’s the FEEL.  The sound, the pace and the WAY Erykah Badu sings the song…the hook in particular makes you just want to put the song on repeat when you need some house cleaning in your life (metaphorically speaking).  A friend, your job, family or a significant other in this case…the energy remains the same.  Purge.  Getting whatever it is out of your system to move on.  Happy belated Ms. Badu.  One of the first songs I heard live before the recorded version and still prefer it as the original article.  Enjoy ya’ll…and if you are gonna purge…

“You need to call Tyrone
(Call Him)

But ya can’t use my phone”

*Special shout out to Nerissa for sharing her mood! I'm with you sister!

The Roots: The next movement #TBT

17 years ago I picked up an album that changed my life.  The second song almost made me never pick up a microphone.  I'm serious.  I was always interested in rhyming but kept it as just free-styling in the beginning because... with an MC like Black Thought... What more can I say?  I can ramble on about what The Roots Crew means to me.  As for Black Thought or "Mr. Thought" if you recognize the precision of his rhymes, he is in my top five.

"The Dalai Lama of the mic, the prime minister Thought
This directed to whoever in listening range
Yo the whole state of things in the world bout to change
Black rain fallin from the sky look strange
The ghetto is red hot, we steppin on flames"

I know I already had a #TBT for the day but it wouldn't feel right if I didn't play this album all week and post it today.   There's a level of excellence I put into EVERYTHING I do that's inspired by this album and this song specifically.

"I'm like a faucet, monopoly's the object
There ain't no way to cut this tap, you got ta get wet
Your head is throbbin and I ain't said shit yet"

You know how some people say the often used phrase "Where do I begin"?  For me, when it comes to The Roots, it's "When should I finish"?  But I won't hold you.  I hope you love this song as much as I do.  17 years...The Roots is still head and shoulders above the rest.

"You theatrical as a Broadway play, this ain't Rent
One hundred percent, straight out the Basement"

Eryn Allen Kane: Have Mercy

I'm feeling a type of way today.  A little more introspective than usual.  Maybe it's the rain right now.  Blame it on the weather.  Maybe it's the state of things when you watch yellow journalism aka news.  Social Media, stop.  Friends, stop. Family, stop. Lover, STOP.  Whether it's all or none of it at all, this is an artist that can take you there.

"When I count all my blessings, blessings

I can't even be sad any more, can't even be sad any more

When I count all my blessings, blessings

My heart still hurts for the world that I know, the world that I know"

Amazing range vocally, and beautiful (let's be honest) but listening to her EP "Aviary:Act 1"  you can't help but feel like that's just the beginning.  Eryn Allen Kane makes the words reach out and touch you in my opinion.  I'm looking forward to more.  Check her out and hopefully she'll confirm where I'm coming from.  This song though...this song is amazing.  Timeless production by Matt Hennessy.

Roman Gianarthur: I-69

I’ll tell you a little secret.  Finding good music is like…birds of a feather.  They flock together.  If you like one artist, do yourself a favor and check out who they align themselves with musically.   Enter Roman Gianarthur.

He’s been out for some time but people are now taking notice thanks to a recent Janelle Monae Tour and Jidenna song.  All great performers but lately this song has me on cloud 9 during the day.  Side note – anyone who is highly sexual will love the content delivered in a class way since no one will automatically assume you’re a perv

Everyone’s music taste is different, and tone means a lot to me when I’m digging an artist.   Roman Gianarthur has a voice I don’t expect to get tired of anytime soon.
